At the grand old age of 42 I smoked two packets of cigarettes a day, drank copious amounts of alcohol, ate anything and everything (bad), did no form of exercise what so ever, using a perceived “globe trotting” live style as my excuse. As an owner of a multi million pound company I don’t respond well to being told what to do, so a real challenge for someone to “sort me out.”

Two years later, with the guidance, attention and expertise of Jon I have lost around 5 stone in weight, the “body abuse” has now stopped and I’m able to enjoy exercise, it’s not a chore, it’s a real enjoyment. Jon has “life-coached” me throughout, helping me understand that living a healthy lifestyle is actually a very nice way to conduct yourself. Surely, I can now ride a bike, but the whole encounter has been much more than that.

Jon posses’ superb motivational skill, every little achievement was rewarded by praise and encouragement, nothing was too major, Jon broke my schedule down into easy to understand and comprehend instructions. Adjusting the training as we went to suit my ever-changing workload and life style.  Whilst originally I found the training programs very tough both physically and mentally, they became easier and as my fitness levels improved, the hours then required to maintain this fitness reduced. In my first year I completed two French sportifes at around 155 km each, and competed in the East Sussex Hard Riders TT, all of which were superb experiences. The fact that Jon actually won the event gave us all an added lift.

Training smart has to be the way forward, there is so much “free” information around today, but generally speaking if something is free of charge, it has no value, therefore, if it has no value its worth………nothing. I’m not saying it’s bad advice, it’s just not tailor made, engaging the service of Jon will ensure you receive a training schedule that fits precisely to your goals, aspirations, ability and available time"

"I have always from an early age enjoyed cycling, mainly for fun and for keeping fit with the majority of the time riding on my own as I had not been involved in the club scene. This changed in 2005 when I joined a local club as I wanted to do more riding on a regular basis and this seemed the ideal way to meet new riders and get more involved in regular group rides.

The club also had a lot of riders who were in to time trialling and never having done any racing before decided to have a go at my first time trial which was an evening club 8 mile event. After finishing the race, feeling sick and dizzy as I had never before ridden at that effort I felt strangely elated at achieving a finish in a faster time than I had imagined I could and found that secretly I had a competitive streak. I did a few more club events to gain confidence and then did a couple of open events which really opened my eyes to how fast people could go, and from this I decided as I wasn’t getting any younger I wanted to see what I could achieve as a personal best. To achieve this I realised I needed to get some proper coaching and I was then introduced to Jon by a member from the club I joined who had been coached by him and had successfully year on year reduced his times and achieved PB after PB.

I initially had a max test done in mid 2007 to see what my power output was and from this I was given my personal training zones and how and I needed to use them to make the  improvements I was seeking.
I was also given advice on how to get the bike set up for time trialling and what parts made the biggest improvements.
I used these for the following events I had entered and my times continually improved so from this I then arranged for personal coaching on a one to one basis with weekly training schedules.
This was done for the remaining 8 week period of the races I had planned to ride and from this I was able to achieve a PB in every race entered.

The coaching is now ongoing and I have managed to learn so much about what my body can do with the right amount of training and rest and I know that every hour I am training is only going to make further improvements for the coming season.

2007 achievements

  • Reduction of over 7 minutes on previous “25” time and winning best improvement for a local “25”
  • Reduction of 1 min 37 secs on previous “10”

I met Jon through a mutual friend. After a few years of cycling i decided to give road racing a go and was rudely awakened by the sheer pace of each race. I finished none of my first 3 and lost heart but then looked for a coach to help me understand where i needed to and most importantly how to improve. I researched a few coaches and gave Jon a call and after my initial consultation i knew it would work.
Jon sets my training each week and takes into account lifestyle and how many hours training can be done in a week. I was very surprised to find recovery days being very important and followed the training all through winter and spring and rolled up at my first road race 2009 and got a 2nd place in a veteran's race.
I was very pleased and now instead of not being able to make the distance, I now finish races and even compete in the final bunch sprints thanks to the training. I contacted Jon at TrainSharp towards the end of the 2008 TT season after hitting a plateau in my TT time's. I decided to get a coach to help, Jon At TrainSharp seemed a great choice as he had great knowledge of local TT course's and had raced at the top level.
Since last autumn Jon has shown me how to organize training with an easily understandable breakdown of the year. Using a weekly training plan and using power based training Jon has improved my TT times over distances 10-100 miles.
